Restructuring of Welsh league to go ahead
June 27, 2014
A new national league structure will come into force in Welsh rugby next season after clubs voted in favour of the new format.
The WRU approved the plan for the SWALEC leagues after a ballot in which 70% of clubs or affiliated organisations voted, with 61% of those who took part supporting the new structure.
The issue of league restructuring had been hotly debated at the WRU's extraordinary general meeting earlier this month, with some clubs concerned about the distances they had to travel to away fixtures in the new system.
The WRU's plans involve scrapping divisions four to seven and replacing them with 13 sub-divisions compiled on a geographical basis.
The WRU said progress of the new league format would be monitored throughout the new season and reviewed in May 2015.
