The Cardiff Blues have said Owen Williams is making "positive progress" following the serious injury he sustained six weeks ago.

The Wales and Cardiff Blues centre suffered a "significant injury" to his cervical vertebrae and spinal cord while playing in the World Club 10s in Singapore in June. News of his injury prompted an outpouring of support from players and fans across world rugby, with Twitter users posting under the hashtag #StayStrongForOws.

Williams has since been transferred to the Welsh Spinal Injuries and Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Rookwood Hospital in Cardiff where he has spent the last three weeks and he is making progress in his recovery.

"Owen now has improving function in both of his upper limbs, whilst being on enforced bed rest," a statement from the Blues read. "He will be progressing to sitting up over the coming few weeks.

"Whilst it is still early days in his recovery, Owen remains positive and overwhelmed by the messages of support from around the world. Owen and his family would like to thank the media for their support and the continued respect of his privacy."
