Just when it seemed Richie McCaw was ready to leave from the limelight fade into retirement, fans of the All Blacks great will instead need to prepare themselves for Richie McCaw - the movie.

Details of the top-secret project from Transmission Films emerged over the weekend as the final touches continue to be applied to the film ahead of its 2016 release.

The documentary-style movie reportedly charts Richie McCaw's final year in the famed black jersey, which culminated in New Zealand's 34-17 victory over Australia in the Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham.

"Being alongside Richie for the past year has been an incredible journey and we are excited to be able to bring his remarkable story to life on the big screen," co-directors Michelle Walsh and Justin Pemberton said.

"His story transcends sport and shows us much about the power of determination and mastering the potential of the human mind."

A short trailer featuring vision of a young McCaw accompanied the weekend's promotion, complemented by the now 34-year-old's narration: "As a little fella I imagined running around chasing the ball with the All Black jersey on ... I was on a mission. I didn't want anything to get in the way of that."
