Welsh clubs express concern over draft fixture list

Welsh clubs are still awaiting official confirmation of their fixtures for next season after several clubs asked the WRU to look again at the list.

One club who are particularly concerned about the situation are Bridgend who face five home games in December, and are then away from the Brewery Field until the 31st March. Club spokesperson Louise Edwards told Scrum that the situation was "unacceptable" to the club. "It is very frustrating, not only do we want to get on and sell seats at our home games but we also generate 40% of our income from social functions - and we cannot use the function facilities when we have a home game. Naturally December would have been the busiest month for such functions".

The club was expecting a revised fixture list by Tuesday evening but by Wednesday morning they had not received anything for their approval.

There is also concern in some quarters that the clubs will be expected to play on the weekends of the test matches against Samoa and South Africa - which will particularly hit the big clubs who will lose players to international commitments. However the draft list pairs two of the hardest hit, Cardiff and Swansea against the leagues minnows Caerphilly and Cross Keys. Cardiff spokesman Alan Evans has told Scrum that his club does not have a problem with this situation. "We have a squad of 32 players and these are games when we should be able to play the development players".

However Llanelli, who are scheduled to make an awkward trip to the Gnoll to face Neath on the same weekend are not so happy. Their chief executive Stuart Gallacher is reported in one Welsh newspaper as saying "No, we do not want to play league matches on the same weekends as Wales play. We don't know which or how many Llanelli players Graham (Henry) will want, but this is all about league points."

Evans also pointed out another potential problem that will delay the official publication of the list. Cardiff and Ebbw Vale are both due to travel to Scotland on the 26th December and Evans believes it would be better for Cardiff to play Vale and the Scottish teams to play each other on that date. "Someone's got it wrong somewhere" he said.

WRU Spokesman Lyn Davies told Scrum that the problems the clubs have voiced will be smoothed out when the list is finally released but would make no further comment on the situation surrounding the test weekends. He believed the final draft of the fixtures would be available by the end of the week.
