Reds to meet European Champions
July 24, 2000

Glasgow Caledonians will face a tough pre-season test when they face European champions Northampton at Franklin's Gardens next month.

The Reds will play the Saints on Tuesday, August 15 (kick-off 7.45pm), and Richie Dixon, Glasgow Caledonians' head coach, had no hesitation in accepting when John Steele, the Northampton director of rugby, offered the Reds the fixture.

"It's a honour to be invited to play against the European champions," the Reds' coach said. "We're really looking forward to the game even though it's just two days after we return from our visit to Vancouver."

Because it is so soon after that Canadian venture the Reds' squad for the Northampton match will be drawn mainly from those who have not been in Vancouver.

However Steele will be warning his players against complacency. "Caledonian Reds have shown in their European Cup fixtures last season that they are a very capable side, and I am sure they will do very well in Europe
this year," said Steele.

In addition to the Canadian tour and the Northampton match the Reds are considering another pre-season fixture before their Celtic League programme begins at Caerphilly on Saturday 26 August.
