Pontypool go into liquidation
July 27, 2000

The future of Pontypool RFC has been brought into question after the limited company backing the club went into voluntary liquidation.

Pontypool RFC Ltd was created in 1998 to look after the commercial affairs of the rugby club, but according to liquidator Keith Morgan of PKF, its demise will not affect Pontypool's ability to play in Wales' Division one in the coming season.

"The rugby club and the limited company are two separate entities.

"The WRU has confirmed it is the members' club which is affiliated to the WRU and will retain the right to play a team in the national league," he said.

"The players are continuing pre-season preparations and it is expected their playing contracts will be transferred into a new company," Mr Morgan added.

Pontypool legend Graham Price said "It's a real shock and a shame for a club like Pontypool.

Alan Francis, chairman of Pontypool RFC Ltd was keen to stress the separation of on- and off-the-field activities.

"The financial pressures have been mounting for some time, but the difficulties put us in an impossible situation in relation to attracting new investors," he said.

"We took the decision to keep these problems in the background in a bid to keep focused on our promotion bid," Francis explained. We are not the first and definitely will not be the last to suffer this fate"
