Harris steps nearer international stage
October 30, 2001

Iestyn Harris today moved closer to winning his first Wales rugby union cap when he was named in a 31-man squad for November Test matches against Argentina, Tonga and Australia.

Former Great Britain and Leeds Rhinos rugby league star Harris has experienced just two hours of competitive action since switching codes in a £1.5million move this summer.

But his record-breaking Heineken Cup display when Cardiff beat Glasgow three days ago provided graphic confirmation that he was ready for a national squad call-up.

Harris scored 31 points - a Cardiff individual record - collecting three tries and running the show from fly-half. Welsh rugby legend Barry John described his performance as being "out of this world".

The 25-year-old could pull on Wales' famous number 10 jersey, previously worn with distinction by the likes of John, Phil Bennett and Jonathan Davies, against Argentina in 11 days' time.

Coach Graham Henry might opt to hold him back for the Tonga clash a week later, yet Harris has made such giant strides in so little time that there seems no point delaying the inevitable.

Harris and fellow league convert, Cardiff team-mate Anthony Sullivan, are the only uncapped players among Henry's party.

Sullivan, who also bagged three tries against Glasgow, gained Wales A recognition during a previous stint in union, and will battle with Neath's Shane Williams for the left-wing position.

Henry has kept faith with the players humiliated by Lloyds TSB Six Nations Championship opponents Ireland earlier this month. Only injured wing Dafydd James, of the 22 on duty that day, misses out.

Number eight Scott Quinnell, lock Ian Gough and wing Gareth Thomas return after missing the 36-6 Irish debacle through injury.

Cardiff provide the biggest single club representation with eight players, while Swansea and Llanelli contribute six each.
