Plumtree parts company with Swansea

Swansea coach John Plumtree has parted compnay with the Welsh club just short of completing a five-year contract as first team boss.

"For some time, I've harboured an ambition to return, at some point, to southern hemisphere rugby in a coaching capacity," said Plumtree, who masterminded Swansea's Welsh-Scottish League title-winning campaign last season.

"With my work at Swansea coming to an end, it seems an appropriate time for me to look to realising this ambition.

"I have been approached quite recently by a few southern hemisphere provinces, who have expressed an interest in offering me coaching positions and I am now going to discuss these options with my family."

Swansea general manager Byron Mugford added: "John's contribution to professional rugby at Swansea has been enormous. He is one of the most respected and talented coaches in the game."

Swansea won two domestic championships under Plumtree's direction, the 1999 Welsh Cup and were Heineken Cup quarter-finalists last term. But this season has proved hugely disappointing, with Swansea failing to reach the Celtic League knockout stages, struggling for league consistency and facing an early European exit.

Swansea's former Welsh internationals Paul Moriarty and Tony Clement will share coaching duties for the remainder of this season.
