Welsh clubs enter into talks with WRU
December 7, 2001

Talks will begin today between the Welsh Rugby Union and its Welsh/Scottish League clubs over proposals to cut the number of clubs in the top flight from nine to six.

The Western Mail reports that the governing body's general committee debated the plan, put forward by the recently formed Premier Rugby Partnership Wales, at its monthly meeting, held in Cardiff last night.

The six-strong group - Bridgend, Cardiff, Llanelli, Newport, Pontypridd and Swansea - wanted it to back its plea for a cull and an increase in funding for the survivors.

The committee - sources said it realised the seriousness of the issue and the plight of Wales's cash-strapped clubs - has called another meeting of its general committee next week.

And it ordered the premiership management board, which consists of four union representatives, including its chairman Glanmor Griffiths, and four club representatives to hold talks today.

It is understood WRU members discussed a range of ideas to ease the pressure on the clubs but were determined not to be forced into making a rushed decision it might regret later.
