Scarlets in the red over unpaid rent
December 11, 2001

Welsh/Scottish League leaders are allegedly owe the Welsh Rugby Union unpaid rent running into six figures for the use of Stradey Park.

The Western Mail reported that the union bought one of the most famous grounds in world rugby four years ago for £1.25m to help Llanelli overcome crippling financial problems and to stay in business as a professional club.

Under the arrangement, Llanelli would pay rental charges for utilising Stradey Park. The exact details of the deal and timing of payments are unknown.

The WRU and Llanelli yesterday refused to discuss the sum of money outstanding or when the club made its last rental payment. But it has been confirmed the governing body is taking steps to recover the debt.

Llanelli chief executive Stuart Gallacher, said, "We are in discussion with the union over on-going funding. We are the tenants at the ground, the WRU is the landlord." Asked to confirm the size of the debt, he replied, "I have got no other comment on the situation other than to say it is a landlord-tenant matter."
