Callard: This is for the fans
January 5, 2002

Bath coach Jon Callard tonight dedicated his team's crucial Heineken Cup victory over Swansea to the club's supporters.

Bath's 24-12 success at St Helens guaranteed them a quarter-final place for the first time since they were crowned European champions in 1998.

And a win against Recreation Ground visitors Biarritz next Saturday should guarantee the West Country outfit a home draw later this month.

Bath reeled off their fifth successive pool three victory in comfortable fashion, scoring first-half tries from flanker Mark Gabey and wing Kevin Maggs, while centre Olly Barkley kicked 14 points through four penalties and a conversion.

"I am pleased with the win - we are hoping to get a home draw now, which is important after we let our supporters down in domestic competitions this season," Callard said.

"It wasn't a high-quality match but I was very pleased with our scrummage and the fact that we scored a couple of tries."

The only blot on Bath's copybook was an injury to their England and Lions full-back Iain Balshaw, who went off early in the second half after taking a blow to his kidneys.

"We are not sure how it happened, but it doesn't look too good at this stage," Callard added.

Swansea, meanwhile bowed out of the competition as they failed to score a try for the fifth group game in a row.

"It is quite alarming that we haven't scored a try in the competition this season," admitted Swansea rugby director Richard Moriarty.

"We were without a number of key players tonight, but that is not to make any excuses. I thought we showed plenty of character out there, considering we were without such influential performers."
