Lewis quits Black and Ambers

Allan Lewis has resigned from his position as director of rugby at Newport - currently top of the Welsh-Scottish League table.

The move could open the door for a possible return to the Black and Ambers by their former fly-half Paul Turner, who is currently coaching the backs at Gloucester.

But the vacant post is likely to attract several candidates given Newport's resurgence over the past few seasons under the guidance of millionaire benefactor Tony Brown.

Lewis said: "When Tony Brown first became involved with Newport he asked me to manage the rejuvenation of Newport as a top class club, both in Wales and in Europe.

"I am pleased the first phase of this transition has been successfully completed, with Newport now competing in Europe, the establishment of a vibrant development programme and an excellent management team.

"But I do now feel it is time for a new challenge.

"My family and I have enjoyed our association with the club and I am proud of my contribution to the resurgence of Newport.

"It would be remiss of me if I was not to thank the general staff at the club for their co-operation and support and in particular the management group for their close friendship and unstinting loyalty."

Brown, the club's senior vice-president, said: "I have spoken with Allan and understand his reasons for seeking a new challenge.

"When he came to Newport in the summer of 1998, we were at a very low ebb. Since then the improvement in our fortunes has been spectacular and I would like to place on record my own appreciation for his contribution in bringing about the renaissance of the club.

"I know from personal experience that he will bring the highest levels of commitment and integrity to whatever he chooses to do in the future and I wish him well."
