Joubert set to remain at Cardiff
February 21, 2002

Rudy Joubert is expected to remain as director of rugby at Cardiff following news that he is not one of the front runners for the vacant Springbok coach position.

The Cardiff coach, who joined the Arms Park club last summer, was one of four candidates shortlisted from 35 applicants for the job and flew out to South Africa on Monday for his interview.

But the Western Mail reported that Joubert is not thought to be among the front runners.

The competition is understood to have come down to a two-horse race with Rudolf Straeuli, head coach of Super 12 outfit Natal Sharks, reckoned to be favourite for the job.

But many are tipping Allister Coetzee, head coach of Eastern Province, as an outside bet to become the first black coach of the Springboks.

"Obviously we want the best for Rudy but we would also love to have him stay at the Arms Park," said Cardiff chief executive Bob Norster. "He has made a big contribution during his time here so far and we are hoping that he will continue to do so."
