Edinburgh and Glasgow battle to a draw
February 22, 2002

Flanker Marty Leslie emerged as the Edinburgh hero, snatching a try in the seventh minute of stoppage time to clinch a 13-13 draw with Glasgow.

The capital men had made a brilliant start, grabbing the lead with a try after just four minutes.

Duncan Hodge's clever cross-kick did the initial damage as Glenn Metcalfe was forced to touch down over his own line.

Former All Blacks skipper Todd Blackadder scooped the ball up from the base of the scrum and sent Derrick Lee through with a superbly-timed overhead pass.

Glasgow hit back with a Tommy Hayes penalty from close-in, with the home side going in at half time leading 5-3.

Cook Islander Hayes repeated the dose immediately after the restart to claim the initiative for his team.

It was just the spur they wanted and within two minutes they carved out a precious touchdown.

Hayes laid the platform with a steepling up and under before half-time sub Alan Bulloch, who has struggled to earn a regular start this season, cruised over after latching onto a feed from brother Gordon.

The conversion was from a wide angle, but again Hayes made light of the elements to add the extras.

Predictably, Scotland's Rome hero Brendan Laney took over the boot duties for the home troops and kept them in the hunt by confidently slotting his first penalty bid.

Edinburgh's hopes rose again when Glasgow prop Gordon McIlwham was yellow-carded for persistently killing the ruck-ball.

They piled on the pressure, forcing the Warriors to give away a spate of penalties in the danger zone.

Then came Leslie's moment of magic - but it was too far out for Laney to convert.
