Wales skipper Ryan Jones has withdrawn from his side's opening Six Nations clash with Scotland at Murrayfield due to a calf strain.

The late blow, confirmed only an hour before kick-off, means that openside flanker Martyn Williams takes over the captaincy and Scarlets back-row Dafydd Jones slots in on the blindside flank. Blues lock Bradley Davies moves onto the replacements bench, and will win his first cap if he takes to the field

With Wales also losing centre Gavin Henson earlier in the week due to a calf strain, they kick off their Grand Slam defence minus two of their most influential stars.

Scotland have suffered their own injury problems in the build-up to the game, with Northampton prop Euan Murray and lock Nathan Hines missing with rib and knee injuries respectively. Uncapped Edinburgh prop Geoff Cross replaces Murray, while Sale flanker Jason White steps in to the second-row in place of Hines.
