The Welsh Rugby Union is to investigate claims of drunken behaviour involving several players in the wake of their Six Nations victory over England.

Wales centre Gavin Henson, scrum-half Mike Phillips, No.8 Andy Powell and fullback Lee Byrne were all allgedly involved as they celebrated their 23-15 victory over England on Sunday night. The Western Mail newspaper reports that Henson had to be led out of a pub because of his conduct.

A witness said Henson had been abusive to customers in a city centre pub opposite the Millennium Stadium. Scrum-half Phillips was said to have apologised to people in the Queen's Vaults on behalf of his team mate.

The paper reported that police were later called to nearby St Mary Street where the four regrouped. A South Wales Police spokeswoman confirmed officers were called to St Mary Street around 9.15pm after reports of a disturbance. A fixed penalty notice was issued to someone for a public order offence, but not one of the players.

A WRU spokesman said, "We don't know a lot more because the players are not in camp at the moment. They are coming back in tomorrow. The plan is to ask them tomorrow for their comments on these claims.

"We will immediately look into these claims after being alerted to them. We have no further comment to make at this stage."

The players had a couple of days' break before returning to their training camp to prepare to continue the defence of their Six Nations crown. In is understood there was no ban on players drinking alcohol.

Henson is yet to take part in this year's Six Nations and missed Saturday's clash against England because of an injury.
