WRU sets date set for EGM

The Welsh Rugby Union have set the date for an extraordinary general meeting designed to smooth things over with the grass roots in the face of restructuring to domestic leagues.

Clubs are being invited to send delegates to the EGM on Sunday, June 15 in Port Talbot, after a campaign led by former WRU chief executive David Moffett forced the governing body to call the meeting.

Clubs are furious at WRU plans to restructure the National League, which involve scrapping divisions four to seven and replacing them with 13 sub-divisions compiled on a geographical basis. The clubs' cause has been taken up by Moffett, who has a personal aim of forcing out some senior officials and returning to the WRU board himself.

The WRU confirmed it had received 43 written applications from clubs to hold the EGM, with the RaboDirect PRO12 regions also throwing their weight behind the clubs amid concerns about the way in which the WRU has communicated with grass roots players and officials.

"It is vitally important to the future of rugby in Wales that those member clubs available to attend do so or, for those that can't be there in person, votes are cast using the proxy forms which have been made widely available," said WRU chief executive Roger Lewis. "We know that those 43 member clubs who called for the meeting will be keen to debate the relevant issues, but we need to ensure that all clubs enter the discussion by either attending or submitting their vote via a proxy form."
