A late attempt to return Marussia to the grid for the last grand prix of the season in Abu Dhabi this weekend has failed.

Just under a fortnight ago, administrators working on behalf of the team confirmed the Banbury-based outfit had ceased trading with the loss of 200 jobs.

However, talks had been held with several potential investors in a bid to get the team back on the road, with Reuters news agency reporting that hopes of a deal were high enough that a contingency plan was formed to fly staff out to the Yas Marina circuit on Wednesday night.

Those talks have since fallen through, however, and the team now has no hope of making the season finale.

Marussia driver Max Chilton tweeted: "Devastated for everyone involved at Marussia in the past 24 hours that the hard work trying to get to Abu Dhabi didn't work out as we hoped."

News of the failure came on the day that Marussia's critically-injured driver Jules Bianchi came out of a medically-induced coma to be transferred to a hospital in his native France, seven weeks after an horrific accident at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Abu Dhabi will see 10 teams on track after Caterham, who, like Marussia, are also in administration, raised enough to race there through a crowdfunding initiative.
