John Boe's side clinched the title in San Francisco with a narrow 19-12 victory over the USA.

The win enabled the Samoans to overtake the Fijians at the top of the table and cap a magnificent season of rebuilding after the 1999 World Cup.

Earlier in the day Canada overwhelmed Japan 62-18, last year's champions managing a solitary Championship point in 2000.
