Usain Bolt atoned for his 100m heartbreak by defending his 200m title in emphatic fashion at the World Athletics Championships in South Korea.

The world record holder streaked to victory in a time of 19.40 seconds to finish ahead of American Walter Dix and France's Christophe Lemaitre.

Having been disqualified from the men's 100m final after a false start, Bolt made no such mistake in the 200m, storming out of the blocks and running a superb bend.

While Bolt was able to ease off in the final 50 metres of the heats and the semi-finals, the Jamaican was forced to grit his teeth and sprint all the way to the line with Dix hot on his heels, although the American never looked likely to catch the Olympic champion.

"I didn't have a point to prove, I just did what I had to do," Bolt said. "I was a bit nervous because this is my favourite event and I love doing it so much.

"The lane was a little bit tight and I didn't run the perfect corner but I'm still happy. I've proved to the world that I'm still the best. I made a mistake in the 100m but I've put it right now."
