Ennis' coach faces uncertain future after UKA reshuffle

Toni Minichiello, the man who guided Jessica Ennis to Olympic heptathlon gold, may be forced to take a 50 per cent pay cut after a reshuffle by UK Athletics.

Minichiello, who has been named British coach of the year, has been told his job is at risk and has been forced to reapply for his role.

UKA performance director Neil Black told The Times: "All coaches were informed that they were at risk of being made redundant. Some positions are no longer available, but everybody had the opportunity to apply for new positions.

"The whole concept is making sure we are making good use of public money on employing people who are making the best contribution to an improved medal response."

UKA wants to make Loughborough University the national base for athletics, but Minichiello would not be able to take on a full-time role there because Ennis lives and trains in Sheffield.

"If I don't get my old job back I'll just have to go back to an office and come down here coaching as a volunteer," Minichiello told the Daily Telegraph. "I'm not giving this up now."
