Triathlon champion Brownlee intends to race Farah

It sounds like a pub debate but Alistair Brownlee intends to run against Mo Farah at next year's Commonwealth Games.

Brownlee won gold in the triathlon at London 2012, blowing his nearest competitor Javier Gomez away over the 10k run which followed a 1.5k swim and 40k cycle.

And it is over 10k which Brownlee wants to race Farah in Glasgow in 2014, although he admits he will not be challenging him for a gold medal.

Brownlee clocked a time of 29.07secs in his triathlon 10k in London while Farah took gold over 10,000m with a time of 27.30secs. But the qualifying time for the 10,000m in previous Commonwealth Games has been in the high 28mins, a more than attainable time range for the 24-year-old from Yorkshire.

"I was talking to my coach this week about how we can put it into action," Brownlee said. "I'm always going to do the triathlon and I've never won a Commonwealth medal so I'm looking forward to giving that a go next year.

"But it's nice to have a new goal. Is it possible to do both? Absolutely. The timetable works because the 10,000m is right at the end of the Commonwealths, but the real challenge will be qualifying.

"In the past at the Commonwealths it has been 28.40 or 28.50 and in London I ran 29.07 - but that was at the end of a triathlon. I could be running against Mo in Glasgow. Well, running behind him as he will be a lot faster!

"But there are a couple of other British runners who are really good too, such as Chris Thompson, so with just three places it's a tough ask to even qualify. But that's the plan."
