Chambers escapes punishment for punching wall

Dwain Chambers will face no disciplinary action for punching through a partition wall at the World Championships in Moscow after writing a letter of apology.

He is said to have "lost the plot" after he and his British 4x100 metres relay teammates were informed they had lost their bronze medals after being disqualified for an illegal changeover during August 18's final.

Chambers, Adam Gemili, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and James Ellington were minutes away from heading to the podium to receive their medals when they were told.

The team had gathered before the presentation ceremony in a room inside the Luzhniki Stadium, with Chambers going into a fit of rage upon hearing the news.

Police were called to the room but Chambers is said to have calmed down by the time they arrived. Now British Athletics have confirmed they will be taking no further action against Chambers after carrying out an investigation into the incident.

"As far as British Athletics is concerned, a line has been drawn under the matter. It has now been sorted and we will not be investigating it any further," said a spokeswoman.

Chambers' letter was forwarded by British Athletics to the IAAF.

Great Britain were disqualified for a changeover infringement involving Aikines-Aryeetey and Ellington. It saw Britain disqualified for a fifth successive time at a major international championship. The team had already enjoyed a celebratory lap of honour on the track.

The IAAF initially said Chambers' reaction "was not a pleasant situation for anyone" but confirmed they will also take no further action.

"It's something that happened, and you can't say that it didn't, but at the same time there's no need to blow it out of proportion," an IAAF spokeswoman said. "We said at the time we would be OK with an apology. That's what was done, and we're absolutely fine with that."
