Farah shortlisted for Athlete of the Year

Double world and Olympic champion Mo Farah has been shortlisted for the International Association of Athletics Federations' annual World Athlete of the Year award.

Farah is up against Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt and Ukrainian high-jumper Bohdan Bondarenko for the award, presented at the IAAF World Athletics Gala on Saturday November 16.

Farah was selected from a longlist of athletes published last month and voted for by the World Athletics Family, which includes fellow elite athletes and the sport's partners and administrators.

Farah became the second man to complete the 5,000 metres and 10,000m 'double-double' at both the Olympics in 2012 and this year's World Championships in Moscow.

The 30-year-old also set a new British and European 1500m record in Monaco in the build-up to the championships.

Bolt became the most successful athlete in World Championships history with another sprint treble - 100m, 200m and 4x100m - in Moscow, bringing his career total to eight gold medals on top of his six Olympic titles.

Bondarenko, 24, also won gold in Moscow and twice cleared 2.41m this season, the highest successful jumps in 19 years.

One notable absentee was Kenyan Wilson Kipsang, the only man to break a world record in 2013 with victory in the Berlin Marathon in two hours three minutes and 23 seconds in September.

Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, winner of the sprint treble in Moscow, heads the women's list, alongside New Zealand shot putter Valerie Adams and Ethiopia's Meseret Defar, who added world 5,000m gold to her Olympic title. The women's finalists will be announced on Tuesday.
