London could abandon plans to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, according to reports from the BBC.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson is thought to have backtracked on his support for the plans, believing the city could not afford to host the event - which could cost around the £1 billion mark.

While a final decision has yet to be made, a source told BBC London: "I think it is very unlikely that London will bid now. The cost of securing many venues is very high."

According to the BBC, both the Commonwealth Games England and the London mayor's office declined to comment on the issue.

Glasgow will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014, while England previously staged the event in Manchester in 2002.

However, it is thought London will shift focus to hosting major championships instead, such as World Athletics Championships in 2017.
