Wallabies and Queensland Reds star Quade Cooper has reportedly been charged by police over an alleged burglary of a local residence.

The shocking and bizarre news - given the well-paid living of the modern rugby player - comes after the 21-year-old returned from what was a personally successful tour with Australia. AAP reported that Cooper was released from Southport watchhouse on Sunday afternoon local time and that he is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on December 11.

Cooper was allegedly caught in the act of going through the possessions of a Gold Coast resident after forcing his way into their home in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police were called to the area and arrested Cooper soon after.

Australian Rugby Union and Queensland Rugby Union have refused to comment on Cooper's future until more information about the incident comes to light but the player's lawyers, Brisbane-based Creevey Russell issued a statement on Monday night.

"Given that Quade has been charged and the matter is before the court, we are limited in what we can say on Quade's behalf about the circumstances giving rise to the alleged offence," the statement read. "Similarly, as much as he would like to, Quade is unable to make any comments to the media about the circumstances.

"However, we can say that the investigations that need to be undertaken in this matter are far from concluded and it would be unfair for anyone to pre-judge Quade or to speculate as to what in fact happened both prior to and at the time of the alleged offence. Quade, like everyone else, is entitled to have the circumstances fully investigated and, if the matter progresses to that point, is entitled to a fair trial."

Cooper starred for the Wallabies at inside centre while starting in all four Grand Slam games of the November tour. But he has a history of indiscipline having been reprimanded for "engaging in a food fight" at the Wallabies team hotel in Canberra in June and fined A$10,000 for bringing the game into disrepute in August following a dispute with a Brisbane taxi driver.
