Lewis Hamilton said he was simply a passenger in his first lap collision with Romain Grosjean at the Belgian Grand Prix, which resulted in Grosjean being given a one race ban.

Hamilton was on the inside going in to turn one as Grosjean drifted across and made contact with the McLaren. The Lotus then took off over the back of Sergio Perez's Sauber and hit Fernando Alonso, putting all four drivers out of the race.

Asked if it was clear what happened, Hamilton said: "It's clear. It should be clear. I couldn't go anywhere. There was no one in front of me and no one behind me, I was kind of on my own and up against the white line and that was that."

He said he was more concerned about Alonso after the incident as Grosjean came perilously close to the Ferrari driver's head.

"I've got a bit of bruising on the leg but I was more concerned for Fernando because it was incredibly close for him," Hamilton added. "Fortunately nobody got seriously injured. The whole week has been a tough one so I'm looking forward to turning the negative energy into a positive. The car is clearly quick and I hope we can get some good results at the next race."
