Which was the last horse to win both the Derby and the St Leger? asked Martin Riddell
The last horse to win both the Derby and the St Leger was Reference Point, owned by Louis Freedman and trained by Henry Cecil, back in 1987. Before that it was the great Nijinsky, who completed the thoroughbreds' Triple Crown - 2000 Guineas, Derby, St Leger - under Lester Piggott in 1970. Oh So Sharp won the fillies' Triple Crown (1000 Guineas, Oaks, St Leger) in 1985. Camelot, which won the Derby and the 2000 Guineas in 2012, made a brave attempt at the Triple Crown last year, finishing second behind Encke in the St Leger. It won't happen this year, as the Derby winner Ruler of the World has not been entered for next month's St Leger.
