Celebrated trainer Floyd Mayweather Snr has suggested that Oscar de la Hoya is considering a shock return to the ring.

De La Hoya, a former six-division title holder and Olympic gold medallist, retired after losing to Manny Pacquiao in December 2008, leaving him with a 39-6 record.

He went on to form the hugely successful Golden Boy promotional company, which looks after Amir Khan and the American interests of David Haye, among others.

But the 38-year-old American checked into a rehabilitation clinic in California in May, with the nature of his issue shrouded in secrecy - a move that apparently brought an end to rumours of a comeback.

Nonetheless Mayweather, who used to train his son Floyd Jnr, believes that a ring return is not impossible.

"I hear Oscar's talking about fighting again. If Oscar plans on fighting again, he better come see me," Mayweather told fighthype.com. "I'm going to be honest with you, I think Oscar will fight again. Hopefully he straightened himself out in rehab and everything, but I think he will go one more time, if not more."

Floyd Mayweather Jnr beat De La Hoya on a split decision during May 2007 in Las Vegas.
