Promoter Eddie Hearn is still aiming for a Carl Froch v Mikkel Kessler fight at Nottingham's City Ground next year - despite Froch's defeat to Andre Ward on Saturday.

Froch lost his WBC super-middleweight title - and the chance to win the Super Six trophy - to Ward on a unanimous points decision following a one-sided contest that ruthlessly exposed the Brit's claim to be the king of the division. Froch was tagged with alarming ease, and found himself frustrated whenever he tried to attack his unbeaten opponent, who looked on a different level.

Ward is now expected to face the IBF champion Lucian Bute - although a light-heavyweight scrap with Bernard Hopkins has also been mooted - leaving Froch free to try and avenge the defeat he suffered against Kessler in 2010.

"Now we are in control of our own destiny," Hearn told Sky Sports. "We've had meetings already with future opponents. Carl Froch is going to come back and fight for a world title. Hopefully we can do something in Britain and he can get the fight, the homecoming he deserves after so many on the road.

"The two fights that stand out are with Lucian Bute or a Kessler rematch. A Kessler rematch at the City Ground in Nottingham in the summer - or something like that - would be a huge event. It's my job to go out and deliver that. We have the chains off our ankles now as we are out of the Super Six tournament, which has been very beneficial for Carl's career - you can never knock that."
