Freddie Roach is confident a proposed showdown between his charge Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jnr will go ahead, though the trainer says planning for a fight in May "could be rushing it".

The path for a mega-fight has been cleared following a judge's decision to delay the start of Mayweather's jail sentence until June 1, and both men have since made known their eagerness to meet each other in the ring.

Mayweather has a pre-booked date of May 5 to fight in Las Vegas, paving the way for a clash with Pacquiao for the title of pound-for-pound king, but trainer Roach is concerned the pre-fight hype could be watered down if they do not promote the bout properly.

"That's a fight you really have to promote," he told boxingscene.com. "A May date could be rushing it. Some of our other big promotions have included 12 cities in 14 days and we should take the time to do something similar. It is good that Mayweather wants to fight now. I believe it will happen soon.

"We have been chasing this guy for two years and he receives a get out of jail card and now he wants to fight. I want Mayweather as much as anyone. A May 5 date is a possibility but a June date would be much better because we would have more time to train. Manny always stays in good shape. If it was up to me I would pick the later date. But I also like the challenge."
