Klitschko trainer Steward recovering

Wladimir Klitschko's trainer, Emanuel Steward, has reportedly undergone surgery for a serious illness.

Steward, who has previously trained the likes of Tommy Hearns and Lennox Lewis, is understood to have been rushed to hospital in Chicago on Wednesday. The 68-year-old complained of feeling unwell, and recently missed his scheduled appearance as a boxing analyst for the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Sergio Martinez bout.

The worst was feared for Steward when promoter Yvon Michel told the press that he "is currently hospitalised in the Chicago area and had surgery today [Wednesday]. He will undergo chemotherapy in the future."

However, Steward's sister, Diane Steward-Jones, later played down the severity of his illness.

"My brother has had problems with a nervous stomach, which turned into diverticulosis," Steward-Jones told Detroit Free Press. "He had to have some repairs and he is resting and recuperating. He is doing very well."

Steward has previously been touted as a potential trainer for Amir Khan.
