Floyd Mayweather Jr has said that talk of his next opponent being Robert Guerrero is only a rumour and still does not know himself who he will face on May 4.

Welterweight Mayweather has not fought since May 5, 2012 when he saw off the challenge of Miguel Cotto by unanimous decision in Las Vegas.

WBC interim world champion Guerrero, 29, was widely tipped to be next and had spoken of his desire to shock the world by inflicting a maiden career defeat on the 35-year-old.

But Mayweather broke his media silence on the matter, via Twitter, to state that a match-up with Guerrero was only a rumour.

"As of right now I don't know who I'm fighting on May 4th," Mayweather tweeted. "Me fighting Robert Guerrero is just a rumour."

If Californian Guerrero does not line up opposite Mayweather at the MGM Grand then Timothy Bradley or Saul Alvarez, who is down to fight on the same bill as Mayweather but at light-middleweight, could do instead.

However Alvarez is tipped to be a September opponent of Mayweather, if they both land victories on May 4.
