Froch: When Mayweather Jr finishes, I could be king

Unified super-middleweight champion Carl Froch wants to fully establish his boxing legacy by exacting revenge on undefeated Andre Ward, the second best pound-for pound fighter in the world behind five-division champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Following his defeat of Mikkel Kessler in Saturday's classic rematch bout at London's O2 Arena, the 'Cobra' was quick to turn his attention to Ward in a bid to cancel out the only other loss on his record.

And with Froch believing that the end is in sight for welterweight king Mayweather Jr, the Nottingham fighter is keen to face Ward and finish his career as the world's best.

"Mayweather is nearly finished and doesn't have many fights left in him," Froch told the Daily Star. "If I can meet and beat Ward, when Mayweather has retired, imagine how that would be? It is the stuff that dreams are made of.

"So, to beat Ward and become the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world would be unbelievable for me. That would be the ultimate way of securing my legacy. Words can't actually describe how it would feel.

"I am in this sport for global recognition that I am an all-time great fighter and you can't give yourself that acclaim. You can only do it by fighting the best of the best and the only one out there now who has beaten me is Ward, because I avenged the Kessler defeat."

Since overcoming Kessler by unanimous decision on May 25, Froch has stressed his desire to face Ward and called for him to make the trip over to the United Kingdom.

But with the Ward camp stating that Froch must 'get in line', it could be a while longer before the 35-year-old has the chance to avenge his 2011 Atlantic City defeat to the American. However, if given the chance, Froch admits it would be the perfect swansong to his career.

"I could happily hang up my gloves if I beat Ward and get that accolade of the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world," Froch added. "I would just say, 'That will do me now, there's nothing else to achieve'.

"I would not go on after that because it would be unbelievable to bow out like that at the top."

Demand for Froch is high, with WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly stating he would drop down the weights for a potential showdown, while unbeaten Brit George Groves is adamant to earn a title shot and would not rule out stepping into the ring with his compatriot.
