Quigg on Frampton's radar, says McGuigan

Barry McGuigan says a potential world title unification fight against Scott Quigg would not be Carl Frampton's first defence, should he win the IBF world super-bantamweight title on Saturday.

Frampton challenges Spain's Kiko Martinez in front of 16,000 fans at a purpose built stadium in the dockyard area of the Titanic Quarter in Belfast.

The unbeaten Belfast boxer, 27, stopped Martinez in nine rounds for the European crown in February last year and if he captures the IBF belt he will not be the only Briton to be in possession of a world super-bantamweight title.

Bury's Scott Quig, also unbeaten, makes the fourth defence of his WBA belt against Belgian Stephane Jamoye a week after Frampton is in action.

Quigg's promoter Eddie Hearn has claimed he has had talks with Frampton's team about a fight and McGuigan insists it is a fight they are also keen on.

But McGuigan says a much anticipated showdown with Quigg will have to wait until later next year if Frampton beats Martinez as he will first have to make a mandatory defence against American Chris Avalos, who won an IBF title eliminator in May.

"We're thinking about it as well," McGuigan told ESPN. "I'm not looking beyond September 6, but as a manager my job is to plan what happens next.

"After Martinez, we will have to consider picking up the mandatory because they gave Kiko an exception and we don't mind that, but what it might do is delay a potential Quigg fight.

"We want the Quigg fight. We've wanted it for a long time but Carl is the draw so they will have to come to us and play ball.

"We promote Carl and the reason I left Eddie was because we wanted to have control of our fighter. We have done all the work and the point is we want to have the Quigg fight.

"We are also keen on Santa Cruz but when Carl dismissed Hugo Cazares as quick as he did in his last fight, all of a sudden they did he didn't want to know, so we switched positions and negotiated with Kiko and he's been paid a fortune to come to Belfast.

"There's been a lot of talk about Carl fighting Scott Quigg in the future, but we are not interested in Quigg at the moment.

"He's piggy-backing off Carl Frampton to get vicarious attention but this guy is the real deal. They tried jumping in front of us and getting the fight with Kiko, but we've got it."

Frampton is focusing on Martinez this week but sees Quigg as one of his targets should he be crowed champion in front of his own fans.

"There are big fights in super-bantamweight division. I'm not looking past Kiko, but there's the WBC champion Santa Cruz and [the WBA champion] Quigg," Frampton told ESPN.

"The Quigg fight will be a shame if it doesn't happen and I hope it does happen, but I don't want to talk about him at the moment."
