Mikkel Kessler has announced his retirement from boxing - but could be tempted to return by an "incredible" offer to fight Carl Froch or Andre Ward again.

Former super-middleweight world champion Kessler revealed his decision to hang up his gloves via his official Twitter account. The Dane defeated Froch in 2010 but has not stepped in the ring since losing his rematch with the Briton in May 2013.

Kessler revealed to ESPN in October that he desired a third and deciding bout against Froch. However, the 36-year-old told Danish newspaper Ekstra Blade he decided to call time on his career as he was only interested in fighting "the best of the best."

Kessler, who became a father for the first time last year, contemplated bouts with fellow Sauerland stablemate George Groves, as well as James DeGale.

He also hinted towards a rematch with Andre Ward; the American, along with Froch and Joe Calzaghe, is one of only three fighters to beat the "Viking Warrior" throughout his 49-fight career that spanned over 17 years.

However, while serious about retirement, Kessler admitted he could still be tempted to return to the ring - but it would have to be an "incredible" offer to make him lace the gloves again.

"I'm mentally stopping my career and will try to move on, but if an incredible offer comes from one of them [Froch or Ward] then I'd be ready," Kessler added.

Calzaghe was one of many fighters past and present to congratulate Kessler on his retirement from boxing.
