Amir Khan may still be basking in the glory of his incredible victory over Marcos Maidana but he has been warned not to get ahead of himself, with promoter Frank Warren insisting it would be "madness" to push for a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

Khan showed heart as well as blistering fast hands as he retained his WBA light-welterweight crown with a thrilling points win over the big-hitting Maidana in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

After being rocked with some telling blows in the 10th round, Khan somehow recovered to clinch a unanimous decision. In the aftermath of what Oscar de la Hoya labelled the fight of the decade at Mandalay Bay, the Bolton boxer's trainer Freddie Roach has led calls for his fighter to step into the ring with the undefeated Mayweather in 2011.

However, Warren, who took Khan under his wing for five years before he left to join Golden Boy Promotions in January, is urging for caution and feels his former charge would be better inclined to clean up the 140lbs division before setting his sights on the likes of Mayweather.

"He's got to go up in weight to fight Mayweather - it's madness. It's great talk and keeps your name in the frame, but not yet," Warren told the Manchester Evening News. "He needs to be patient. He needs to clean up the division first of all."
