Lennox Lewis has hailed Vitali Klitschko, who is set to fight David Haye later this year, describing him as one of the toughest opponents he faced.

Lewis struggled against Klitschko during 2003, recording a fortunate stoppage victory despite trailing on all three of the judges' scorecards, with the Ukrainian afflicted by cuts.

That was the last time Lewis entered the ring, while Klitschko embarked on a four-year break from the sport between 2004 and 2008. Since returning, he has picked up the WBC strap, which he defends on Saturday against Cuba's Odlanier Solis.

"Vitali was one of the toughest opponents I ever faced," Lewis said. "To adapt to his height and reach was a real challenge for me. He will have all the advantages against Solis.

"To come back from his lay-off like he did and win the title again is a tremendous accomplishment. To continue winning at his age and to still have the drive that he does is amazing."

Lewis has suggested that Klitschko has carried on fighting into his 40th year because he is yet to have a career-defining fight. "Vitali is still looking for his big show," he said. "I had mine with Mike Tyson and he's still looking for his. He is still searching for that glory, some guy to stand up and say I'm the man to give him the challenge that he needs."
