Alonso rues mistake that cost P2
Fernando Alonso said it "was not difficult" for him to get second place on the grid for the Brazilian Grand Prix but bemoaned a mistake he made on his final lap.
After wet conditions saw a delay between Q2 and Q3, the majority of the running still took place on the intermediate tyres in the final part of the qualifying as track conditions continued to improve. With Alonso improving on his final lap but then running off track before setting the fastest final sector he said he could have bridged the 0.4s gap to Nico Rosberg.
"I have mixed feelings to be honest," Alonso said. "I am happy to be so far up the grid to be honest because we've started between seventh and tenth at the last five or six grands prix which is not ideal, so being in the first three is good but I'm not totally happy with my lap.
"I lost a lot of time. Not obviously enough to beat Seb [Vettel] - he's too far in front of us - but I think for second place it was not difficult. I lost something like seven or eight tenths in Turn 4 running off the circuit in to the painted area and I lost a lot of time there. I think second could have been possible but I'm obviously not sad with third and all the opportunities that are up in front of us for tomorrows race starting at the front."
Alonso also said he felt Ferrari has been unlucky that there has yet to be a wet race so far this season.
"Well we know that in wet conditions we normally improve our performance a little bit. We were waiting for some wet races this year but it came only in Brazil."
