Jenson Button said McLaren needed its good result at the Brazilian Grand Prix after an entire season without a podium.

Button finished fourth at Interlagos after starting 14th on the grid, making the most of a race of attrition and strategy ahead of him. He was hoping for a podium but said he was pleased to come away with his and the team's best result of the season.

"From where we qualified it was great to finish fourth," he said. "In the simulator this always felt like a very special track for us. Pleased with fourth and it's almost the third we came here aiming for. We needed this at the end of the year, especially myself as I've had a tough ride at the last few races.

Button said there was no way of challenging the cars in front and he was concerned about Nico Rosberg behind him in fifth.

"It was such a difficult race at the end trying to judge how hard to push on the tyres because I didn't know what Nico could do. It was just keeping them at bay, I knew we couldn't race the guys in front but we had to push when we could. A great way to end the year."
