'I've never been so pleased to get out of a car' - Button

Jenson Button said he felt like he was racing in a different category at the Canadian Grand Prix after both McLarens finished outside the points.

Button started 14th on the grid after a disappointing qualifying and then attempted a one-stop strategy in the race that fell flat on its face and left him 12th at the finish. He said it had been a "painful" race and that McLaren has a lot of work to do.

"I've never been so pleased to get out of a car," he said. "It was quite painful out there today. I went for an upside down one-stop today with super-soft tyres first and then mediums. It wasn't planned but we thought we'd give it a go. I thought it was working until we came on to the circuit and we were behind everyone else.

"We've got a lot of work to do. But I think we proved today that it didn't matter what we did with the car today, we were out of the points. That was very painful as it's a circuit that is normally very good to McLaren."

The race brought an end to McLaren's run of 64 consecutive races in the points, but Button said the team was more disappointed by the car's lack of pace.

"If we'd scored a point here I think we would still be disappointed - we got lapped and easily lapped," he added. "It was like we were in a different category. We just didn't have the speed and I really don't know what else to say."
