Kobayashi hoping for three-car teams
Kamui Kobayashi is hoping three-car teams will become a reality in order to give him a chance of reviving his F1 career.
Koabayshi was driving for Caterham this year but the team entered administration last week and will be wound up if a buyer cannot be found in the next two weeks. If Caterham and Marussia, which is also in administration, fail to make the grid next year there have been suggestions the remaining nine teams could be asked to run a third car. Kobayashi says that would open up opportunities but is still uncertain what will happen next year.
"I'm wishing [for] that, but let's see. I'm here to make a dream come true. I try to find a solution without money, so I'll see what I can do."
Koabayshi brought crowd-sourced funding to the team this year to secure his seat, but is unlikely to be able to do the same again. He admits he is in a tricky position trying to secure a 2015 seat against better funded drivers, such as Caterham team-mate Marcus Ericsson.
"I'm here without money but I want to win in Formula One without money, but it's very difficult. It's many driver's dream but I need to make the dream come true. That's why I'm here. In the past I didn't mind because I could get an experience opportunity and at least I can say to other teams I have experience. At least at this point I think my decision this year was good to prove what I can do.
"I've been looking for some weeks. But still, technically, I am a Caterham driver, but I think from now I can do more and I need to negotiate to see what I can do."
Kobayashi said no-one at the team has talked to him about the situation and he was relying on websites for updates on Caterham's situation.
"I didn't really find out. They [the management] are pretty busy so we are in contact with them but we did not want to disturb. As I could see on the websites Caterham was not racing here. I just got some information from my manager that we are not racing here this week and next week."
