Rosberg struggles with brakes in Shanghai qualifying
Braking issues were behind Nico Rosberg's struggle in qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix, but he admitted he was not quick enough in general to challenge for the front row of the grid.
The Mercedes drivers have become accustomed to leading the field this year, but in the wet conditions Rosberg was only able to qualify fourth, behind both Red Bulls. On his final attempt in Q3 he spun coming out of the final corner, but said he had to take risks to close the 1.2s gap to team-mate Lewis Hamilton on pole.
"I was just trying a little bit too hard and I was slower anyway on that last lap so I just had to give it a go in the last corner and see if I could somehow magically pull back a little bit of time and it didn't quite work out," Rosberg said. "It didn't really change much, I just wasn't quick enough in general."
Rosberg said problems under braking had been exacerbated by the wet weather in qualifying, but is hoping it won't be such a big issue if the race is dry.
"It was generally not quick enough today, that was the main issue. I was struggling on the brakes and that's why my last sector was so bad. The braking was really difficult and that's a pity. I don't feel too comfortable at the moment, but in the dry it is less of a problem."
