Stuart Broad insists he was not dropped for England's last one-day international against Sri Lanka.

Broad, who has endured a lean summer, has also struggled with a bruised left heel and strained right ankle ligaments and faces a fight with Tim Bresnan for a place in the starting XI for England's first Test against India at Lord's on Thursday.

He was replaced by Samit Patel for the series decider at Old Trafford as Alastair Cook secured his first series win as ODI skipper, but Broad says it was a joint decision so that he could focus on the longer format of the game.

"Was I dropped for the last one-day international against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford? Well, that's not how it was communicated to me," Broad wrote in the Daily Mail. "Because of the state of my feet, I couldn't play in that last game and the Championship match for Notts the following week and it was important to get some red-ball cricket.

"We were always going to play two spinners in Manchester because the pitch was more like a subcontinental one than an English surface and, with our other three seamers bowling so well, it wasn't a major risk for me not to play."
