Kevin Pietersen is a doubt for England's Twenty20 international against India on Sunday after suffering a broken thumb.

Pietersen was ruled out of the final one-day international in Kolkata after scans revealed he had fractured his left thumb after being struck while fielding during the second innings of the fourth ODI in Mumbai.

"[Pietersen] will remain with the England team and continue to undergo assessment and treatment in a bid to prove his fitness ahead of England's forthcoming international Twenty20 fixture against India on Saturday," said a statement on the ECB website.

To add insult to injury, Pietersen was then struck on the left hand by a stray ball while he watched his side warm up in Kolkata.

Pietersen has been one of England's most consistent batsmen in India, scoring 170 in the opening four ODIs, with a high-score of 64 in Mohali.
