Bradley Wiggins is targeting a swift recovery after learning that he needs surgery on his broken collarbone.

Wiggins, who had been targeting a podium finish in this year's Tour de France, saw his challenge come to an abrupt end on Friday after sustaining the injury in a crash on the seventh stage between Le Mans and Chateauroux.

However, despite needing to have a plate fitted, Wiggins' team are confident that the Olympic champion will be back on the bike within a couple of weeks.

"Bradley has already seen the specialist and he will have a couple of plates fitted," Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford told Sky Sports News. "It's the most common injury in cycling so in general people know how to rehab from it so for us it's just a question of recalibrating the season and moving forward.

"He shouldn't be off the bike for long at all. What was so disappointing was that he was in such great shape and we really felt he could have gone top five or better in the Tour. Crashes happen but there is a lot of the season left yet for Brad."
