Mark Cavendish will hang onto the yellow jersey for another day after the second stage of the Tour of Britain from Kendal to Blackpool was cancelled due to high winds.

Competing in his home event for the first time since 2007, Cavendish picked up where he left off on Sunday, storming to victory on the opening stage in poor weather conditions in Scotland.

Earlier on Monday morning, Cavendish had commented on the weather conditions in the North West. "Anyone seen that footage of thrillseeker wind-surfers out on the water in hurricanes?" he wrote on his Twitter account. "We're racing our bikes in that s*** today!"

With cycling enjoying a bigger profile in the UK, largely thanks to Team GB's success at the Beijing Olympics and Cavendish's green jersey triumph at this year's Tour de France, Cavendish has noticed a real difference since his last appearance in the event.

"We had wicked support. The amount of cheers and banners along the stage was brilliant," Cavendish said after his stage victory in Dumfries. "[They were] super encouraging. You wouldn't expect this is Britain and it's very different to when I last raced here in 2007. It's very nice. This event is certainly growing."
