World champion cyclist Mark Cavendish received his MBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday afternoon.

Cavendish was awarded the honour after winning both the Tour de France's green jersey and gold in the road race at the Road World Championships in 2011.

Cavendish was one of the few male cyclists not to come away with a commendation after the 2008 Olympics, so joked that he was happy to have finally joined their ranks.

"All the guys from Beijing got them in 2008 so I've waited quite a bit longer - it was really nice," Cavendish said, before revealing what he discussed with the Queen: "She said I must have put in a lot of hard work to get where I am.

"We were talking about the Olympics and (my event) finishing on the Mall outside Buckingham Palace next year - I told her to give me a cheer when we come past."
