Cyclist Mark Cavendish has been installed as favourite by bet365 after the nominations for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2011 were released.

Cavendish became the first British winner of the green jersey in the Tour de France, having triumphed in five stages. He was also crowned road race world champion in Denmark.

Second-favourite Darren Clarke, who lifted the Open Championship trophy this year at the age of 42, is joined on the shortlist by fellow golf stars Rory McIlroy, the US Open winner by a record margin, and world No. 1 Luke Donald.

Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook have been rewarded following a fine 12 months for English cricket, with the Test side currently atop the world rankings.

Athletics world champions Mo Farah (5,000 metres) and Dai Greene (400m hurdles) also feature, while the shortlist is completed by boxer Amir Khan and tennis star Andy Murray. Khan now holds two world titles at light-welterweight; Murray reached at least the semi-final of all four grand slam events.

The winner will be announced in a live event at MediaCityUK, Salford on December 22. Jockey Tony McCoy was awarded the honour last year after winning the Grand National on Don't Push It.
