Daniel Moreno won an uphill sprint for the line in the second stage of the Criterium du Dauphine, with Britain's Bradley Wiggins retaining his grip on the yellow jersey.

Moreno, who won a stage of the Tour of Spain last year, left it late before powering clear of the breakaway group on the ascent to Saint-Felicien to edge out French pair Julien Simon and Tony Gallopin.

Team Sky's Wiggins finished the 160km route through the eastern Ardennes in ninth place, recording the same time as Tour de France winner Cadel Evans, who came home in seventh. Consequently, Wiggins, who won the Paris-Nice race in March, maintains his slender one-second lead in the General Classification.

Jurgen Van Den Broeck (Lotto Belisol Team), Rinaldo Nocentini (AG2R La Mondiale), Gallopin and Simon all gave chase but the Katusha rider never looked like relinquishing his position.
